‘But we’ve always done it this way…’

Churches aren’t known for being the quickest to change their ways. However, unlike what people may think, the worship we offer today is very different to how it used to be.

Venture through the epochs of antiquity, the medieval era, the Renaissance, and into the modern age, as we unravel the significance of sacred rites and their dynamic evolution. Learn about the profound impact of historical events, influential figures, and cultural shifts that have left an indelible mark on how we express our reverence.

Discover how different religious denominations and cultures have adapted and personalised liturgical practices, celebrating the diversity of human expression in the divine realm. Delve into the myriad of rituals, hymns, and ceremonial customs that have evolved to accommodate the changing needs and beliefs of worshippers.

Whether you are a devoted worshipper, a history enthusiast, or simply curious about the captivating journey of liturgy, this lecture promises to leave you with a deeper appreciation for the timeless and universal pursuit of connecting with the divine.

This talk is given by Clark Brydon (Education & Safeguarding Officer and Vicar of the Prebendary of Monmohenock at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral), who is currently undertaking a PhD at Trinity College Dublin in the introduction of contemporary English in the liturgy, and the effect that this had on church musicians.
