The Conservation of Saint Patrick’s Banner, 1919 and the Nuns of Saint John’s, Sandymount.
Several years ago while researching an altar frontal, the conservator came across a reference to a specially commissioned embroidered banner of Saint Patrick and realised that this must be the processional banner stored in the Cathedral. The banner had been extensively repaired many years ago and was in poor condition. However, it is still carried in procession every Saint Patrick’s Day. With the generous help of the Friends of Saint Patrick, the banner is now undergoing conservation and this talk will outline some of the conservation process, as well as highlighting the work of the Saint John’s School of Embroidery, and their forgotten contribution to the Irish Arts and Crafts movement
Speakers: Rachel Phelan, A-ICRI. (Cathedral Conservator)
