Heritage Week: Organ Recital (Stuart Nicholson)

Mozart is said to have called the organ the King of Instruments, and with good reason too. Organs have the capacity (at least some of them) to play higher, lower, and – where necessary – a good deal louder than any other acoustic instrument; they can even match the might of your average symphony orchestra.

Making the most of their versatility, and well before the advent of Spotify, YouTube, and – for those old enough to remember them – CDs, cassettes, and LPs, organists would often make transcriptions of orchestral works to entertain parishioners who otherwise wouldn’t have had the easy access to a wealth of music that we enjoy at the touch of a button today.

So, for the last of this year’s Heritage Week organ recitals, we present a programme of completely non-organ music. A little ballet, a little light opera, a little concert hall, and a little nonsense too.
